Gourmet gets the knife on Conde Nast's chopping block

The "New Yorker" of food magazines is closing. How sad. Our collective inhale of Julia Child in the form of Julie & Julia is now paired with the big exhale of Gourmet, the venerable Conde Nast publication that was killed on Monday morning.

For me, one can't exist without the other. In the '70s, Mom watched Julia Child on television every week and subscribed to Gourmet. Together they provided the encouragement for all the braising, sauteeing, stuffing and basting going on in the kitchen most nights. I played sous chef. Isn't this what every elementary school kid did between piano lessons and Little League?
